Elfreth's Alley archaeological finds

Excavations and artifact recovery at Elfreth's Alley and nearby properties have documented 18th- and 19th-century dwelling foundations, privy fills, and household items including ceramics and clay tobacco pipes. These archaeological records support Elfreth's Alley's designation as one of the oldest continuously inhabited residential streets in the United States and have guided preservation of historic building fabric. Archaeological work there has been conducted during restoration and research projects by municipal and park historians.
