Dry Creek explosives depot

The Dry Creek explosives depot, operational from 1904 to 1995 near Port Adelaide, served as a crucial storage facility for explosives used in South Australia's construction and mining industries. Built in 1906, it featured ten magazines designed for safe storage, connected by a narrow gauge tramway for transporting explosives. The depot was noted for its innovative safety measures, including mounds between magazines to prevent chain reactions in case of an explosion. Over the years, the facility saw a decline in usage and maintenance, leading to its closure in 1995. Today, eleven historic buildings from the depot are recognized on the South Australian Heritage Register, offering a glimpse into the region's industrial past and the evolution of explosive storage practices.
