Houston Astrodome - first domed multi-purpose stadium

The Houston Astrodome opened in 1965 as the world’s first multi-purpose, domed sports stadium and quickly became known for its enclosed, climate-controlled design. It was the original home of the Houston Astros (MLB) and Houston Oilers (AFL/NFL). The failure of natural grass under the dome led to the nationwide adoption of synthetic AstroTurf. The structure was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2014.
