Las Vegas Springs (Springs Preserve)

The modern city of Las Vegas originated at a natural oasis of artesian springs fed by the Las Vegas Valley aquifer, which supported Indigenous Southern Paiute use and 19th-century settlers. Much of the spring site and its history are preserved and interpreted at Springs Preserve. Intensive groundwater pumping in the 20th century lowered the water table and caused most of the historical springs to cease flowing by the mid-20th century.
