Watergate complex and the 1972 break-in

The Watergate complex is a curving, mixed-use riverside development designed in the 1960s by Italian architect Luigi Moretti. It housed the Democratic National Committee offices where the June 17, 1972 break-in occurred, an event that led to the Watergate scandal and President Richard Nixon's resignation. The complex's distinctive crescent-shaped buildings and plaza remain a notable example of mid-20th-century modernist residential and office architecture in Washington.
