James Neal House

The James Neal House, located at 74 Deer Street in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, is a historic brick house built around 1830. It is notable for being the only brick house in the Deer Street area and one of the last examples of Federal style architecture in the city. The house features a distinctive three-story structure with a center entrance adorned by a Federal style fanlight and retains much of its original transitional Federal-Greek Revival interior. Built by local merchant James Neal, the house reflects the sophistication of its time in a predominantly residential area. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972, making it a significant site for both tourists and researchers interested in early American architecture.
