The building was financed by Indiana native Lew Wallace, author of the bestselling novel 'Ben Hur,' and is named after a palace mentioned in his work 'The Prince of India.' Wallace lived in The Blacherne until his death, and the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983, making it a notable site for both tourists and researchers interested in architectural history and literary heritage.
