Dhowa Rock Temple

Dhowa Rock Temple, also known as Dowa Raja Maha Viharaya, is a historic Buddhist temple located in the scenic Uva Province of Sri Lanka, approximately 7.5 km north of Bandarawela. Believed to have been built in the first century BC by King Valagamba, this archaeological site features a remarkable 12-meter high unfinished Buddha statue carved into the granite rockface, showcasing exquisite Mahayana sculpture. Visitors can explore the temple's cave-like image house adorned with vibrant murals of Buddha, guarded by two mythical statues. Recognized as a protected monument since 1996, Dhowa Rock Temple offers a glimpse into Sri Lanka's rich cultural heritage and ancient artistry.
