Kenilworth Park & Aquatic Gardens prehistoric sites

Kenilworth Park & Aquatic Gardens and adjacent Anacostia River shoreline contain documented prehistoric archaeological sites, including shell midden deposits and lithic artifacts indicating Native American use of the floodplain. National Park Service surveys and investigations have recorded these deposits as part of the broader Anacostia River archaeological landscape, contributing evidence for pre-contact habitation and resource use. The park preserves both natural wetlands and areas of documented archaeological sensitivity.
