West Virginia Colored Children's Home

The West Virginia Colored Children's Home, located near Huntington, was the state's first institution dedicated to African American children, serving as a school, orphanage, and sanatorium. Established in 1899 and moving to its final location in 1903, the main building, constructed in 1922-1923, showcased Classical Revival architecture. It played a significant role in the community until its closure in 1956, after which it transitioned to a nursing home and later apartments. Despite its historical significance and being listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997, the building was demolished in 2011 to make way for a new school. The site reflects a rich history of education and social services for African Americans in West Virginia.
