Joseph Steffens House

The Joseph Steffens House, once a unique historic site in eastern Carroll County, Illinois, was the only surviving rammed earth house in the state, built in 1843. This construction method, which involves using soil to create walls, was rare in Illinois and reflects a blend of European techniques and local adaptations. Although the house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985, it unfortunately collapsed in the late 2000s, leaving behind only a cornfield at the site. This location offers a glimpse into the innovative building practices of early American settlers.
