Watergate Complex (modernist riverside development and scandal site)

The Watergate complex, developed along the Potomac River in the 1960s, is noted for its curving, terraced towers and travertine-clad plazas as an example of midcentury modernist mixed-use design in Washington, D.C. The complex contained the offices linked to the 1972 break-in that precipitated the Watergate political scandal. Architecturally, its horizontal masses and recessed terraces contrast with nearby classical federal buildings and remain a recognized landmark in Foggy Bottom.
