Stonewall Police Raid and Uprising

On June 28, 1969, New York City police conducted a raid on the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar at Christopher Street; patrons and local residents resisted, triggering several nights of demonstrations. The Stonewall uprising is widely credited with catalyzing the modern LGBT rights movement in the United States. The Stonewall Inn is now a designated National Historic Landmark and part of the Stonewall National Monument. The site remains a focal point for Pride commemorations and studies of policing and civil unrest.
