Mission Dolores foundations and burial grounds

Mission San Francisco de Asís (Mission Dolores), founded in 1776, contains surviving 18th- and 19th-century adobe foundations and an associated historic cemetery where human burials and earlier foundation remains have been documented by archaeological investigations. Excavations and preservation work around the basilica and parish grounds have revealed earlier adobe walls, buried features, and historic graves that testify to the mission’s long occupation and layers of construction. The mission complex is the oldest surviving structure in San Francisco and is regularly interpreted for its archaeological as well as architectural history.
