Franklin Square

Laid out in 1682 as one of William Penn's original five public squares, Franklin Square is among Philadelphia's oldest planned public open spaces. The park's basic rectangular layout dates to the colonial plan and it served 18th- and 19th-century urban recreational and civic functions. The square underwent major restoration and was reopened with modern amenities in 2006 while retaining its historic role in the city's planned street-grid infrastructure.
