Vine Forest

Vine Forest, also known as Forest Oaks, is a historic house located near Natural Bridge in Virginia. Built in 1806 by Matthew Houston, cousin of Texan Sam Houston, it originally served as a store, tavern, and family home. The house underwent significant Colonial Revival expansions in 1812, featuring a grand two-story center hall. Surviving the Civil War, it remained largely unchanged until 1916 when architect Curtis Walton transformed it into an English country manor, adding intricate oak woodwork and Greek revival cottages. Vine Forest was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987, making it a notable site for tourists and researchers interested in American history and architecture.
