Sutro Baths and Adolph Sutro

Adolph Sutro, a former San Francisco mayor and entrepreneur, built the Sutro Baths in 1896 as a large public saltwater bathing complex and entertainment center at Lands End. The baths operated into the mid-20th century but were closed and largely destroyed by fire in 1966; their concrete ruins remain a public historic site. The site and adjacent Sutro Heights Park reflect Sutro's influence on late-19th-century recreational development in San Francisco.
