Clan House, Galle

Clan House is a historic two-storey white stone building located at 24 Church Street in Galle, Sri Lanka. Constructed in 1847 by the British mercantile firm John Black and Company, it served as a key shipping agency for the Clan Line. The building has a rich history, including its role as the Head Shipping Office for Clark Spence and Company, which became the sole agent of Lloyd’s of London in Ceylon. Currently owned by Aitken Spence and Company, plans are underway to transform Clan House into a boutique hotel, preserving its heritage within the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Galle Fort. This site offers a glimpse into the colonial maritime history of Sri Lanka, making it an intriguing destination for tourists and researchers alike.
