Alcatraz Island, the former federal penitentiary now managed by the National Park Service as part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, is served by ferry departures from Pier 33 Alcatraz Landing. Day and night tours from Pier 33 are among the city's most-visited attractions, often drawing long lines at the departure point. Locals frequently joke that visiting Alcatraz and taking the standard tourist photo has become a near-obligatory San Francisco experience.
