Zero Milestone (Ellipse, President's Park)

The Zero Milestone is a small granite and bronze marker placed on the north edge of the Ellipse in 1923 and intended as the point from which road distances in the United States would be measured. The marker is inscribed with directional lines and the words "Zero Milestone." It is on National Park Service land in President's Park, just south of the White House. In practice, road distances are not consistently measured from this marker, but it remains a documented federal survey monument.
