Carlile House

Carlile House, a historic building in Grey Lynn, Auckland, was established in 1886 as the Costley Training Institute, originally serving as a boys' home and training center. Funded by a generous bequest, it has a rich history, including serving as a children's home and later as a training school for the Church Army. The building features striking Italianate architecture with an H-plan layout and a central columned portico. Despite its historical significance and designation as a Heritage New Zealand Category 1 Historic Place, Carlile House is currently in a state of disrepair, raising concerns about its future. The site has also hosted cultural performances reflecting the experiences of Tongan immigrants, making it a point of interest for both tourists and researchers alike.
