de Young Museum (origin in 1894 exposition; rebuilt 2005)

The de Young Museum traces its origins to the 1894 California Midwinter International Exposition in Golden Gate Park; the institution evolved into the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco's de Young. The current de Young building, designed by Herzog & de Meuron, opened in 2005 and features a distinctive copper-clad facade and an observation tower with city views. The museum houses American art from the 17th through 21st centuries as well as international collections.
