Library of Congress: world's largest library

The Library of Congress is the largest library in the world by shelf space and number of items, holding more than 170 million items in multiple formats. Its Thomas Jefferson Building, opened in 1897, houses many of the library’s public reading rooms and historic collections. The institution serves as the research arm of Congress and is a major national repository of books, recordings, maps, photographs, and manuscripts.
