Ruth Fairfax House

The Ruth Fairfax House, located in Ingham, Queensland, is a unique heritage-listed residence that showcases the first known piece of authentic Japanese architecture in Australia. Built between 1887 and 1962, the house was originally constructed in Japan and imported by Judge George William Paul, who was inspired by a house he stayed in during his travels. The structure features traditional Japanese design elements, including movable shoji screens and a distinctive shoin style, which reflects the cultural exchange between Japan and the West during the late 19th century. After being dismantled and relocated to its current site in Ingham, the house was added to the Queensland Heritage Register in 2003, making it a significant historical site for both tourists and researchers interested in architectural history and cultural heritage.
