Domus Sanctae Marthae

The Domus Sanctae Marthae, completed in 1996, serves as a guest house for clergy and members of the College of Cardinals in Vatican City. Named after Martha of Bethany, it was built to provide comfortable accommodations for cardinals during papal conclaves, replacing the less hospitable conditions of the Apostolic Palace. The five-story building features 106 suites and various amenities, and is run by the Daughters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul. Notably, Pope Francis chose to reside here from 2013 until his death in 2025, marking a departure from tradition. The Domus has been pivotal during conclaves, ensuring the privacy and comfort of cardinal-electors, while also housing support staff. Its history includes serving as a hospice and refuge during significant historical events, making it a site of both spiritual and historical importance.
