5Pointz (Long Island City graffiti mecca)

5Pointz was an outdoor aerosol-art complex located in Long Island City that became an internationally recognized graffiti and mural venue in the 2000s. Artists from around the world painted large-scale works across the buildings’ facades under an unspoken permission culture fostered by the property’s owner. The complex was whitewashed in 2013 and demolished in 2014 to make way for residential development. In 2018 a federal court found the owner liable under the Visual Artists Rights Act for destroying the works and awarded damages to several artists.
