1998 U.S. Capitol shooting that killed two officers

On July 24, 1998, Russell Eugene Weston Jr. entered the U.S. Capitol and fatally shot Capitol Police Detective Jacob Chestnut and Detective John Gibson inside the building. Weston was apprehended at the scene and subsequently charged; the attack prompted reviews of Capitol security procedures. The incident is one of the deadliest attacks on Capitol Police in the building's history.
