Mission Dolores Cemetery and early burials

The Mission Dolores Cemetery, part of the Mission San Francisco de Asís complex, contains burials of Native Californians, Spanish colonists, and early settlers dating to the mission period. It is the oldest extant cemetery in San Francisco and includes both marked and unmarked graves from the late 18th and 19th centuries. The cemetery was closed to new burials in the late 19th century and remains a documented historical site used by historians researching early San Francisco residents. Portions of the cemetery and many of its grave markers survive on the mission grounds.
