LMS Scientific Research Laboratory

The LMS Scientific Research Laboratory, established in 1923 in Derby, UK, was a pioneering facility for railway research. Founded by Sir Harold Hartley, it amalgamated various research disciplines including aerodynamics, metallurgy, and textile studies. Notably, it contributed to the design of the Coronation locomotives and conducted significant studies on train operations. The laboratory evolved through nationalisation and privatisation, eventually becoming part of the British Rail Research Division. Today, the historic site is home to the Zaytouna School, an Islamic primary school, offering a unique glimpse into the evolution of railway technology and its impact on transportation.
