Whitney Museum of American Art (original building)

The original building of the Whitney Museum of American Art, located at 8–12 West 8th Street in Manhattan's Greenwich Village, consists of three historic rowhouses dating back to 1838. Established by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney in 1929 after her artworks were rejected by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the museum opened its doors in 1931. The building features a unique interior redesigned by artist Robert Winthrop Chanler, showcasing elaborate decorations. The site is part of the Greenwich Village Historic District and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1992. Today, it serves as the New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting and Sculpture, following the museum's relocation in the 1960s.
