Kaplaneios School

The Kaplaneios School, established in Ioannina, Greece, in 1797, was a pivotal educational institution that played a crucial role in the Greek Enlightenment. Founded by local merchants Manthos and Zois Kaplanis, it became a center for progressive education under the leadership of Athanasios Psalidas, who introduced modern subjects and advocated for the use of the vernacular Greek language. The school faced challenges during the Greek War of Independence and was ultimately destroyed, but it was rebuilt between 1922 and 1926 and continues to serve educational purposes today. Notable alumni include influential scholars and figures in banking and education, making it a significant landmark in the history of Greek education.
