Mariefred Charterhouse

Mariefred Charterhouse, established in 1493, was the only Carthusian monastery in Scandinavia, located in Södermanland, Sweden. Founded by notable figures including Archbishop Jakob Ulvsson, it became a significant site for religious devotion and cultural activity, featuring a printing press that produced influential literature. The monastery was short-lived, being secularized in 1526 by Gustav Vasa, who repurposed its materials for Gripsholm Castle. Today, visitors can explore the remnants of the site, including Mariefred Church, built over the monastery's ruins, and the Sten Sture stone, commemorating its founder. The site offers a glimpse into Sweden's monastic history and its transition during the Reformation.
