Decorah Woolen Mill

The Decorah Woolen Mill, a historic site in Decorah, Iowa, was built in 1867 and has a rich history of various manufacturing operations, including glove and mitten production and pharmaceuticals. It survived a tornado in 1908 and continued to evolve through different ownerships until becoming Decorah Tire Service in 1955. The mill was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2001 and transformed into a 15-unit apartment building in 2002. Its significance lies in its role in water-powered manufacturing and wool milling in the Midwest during the 19th century, with the Upper Iowa River once providing its power until 1949.
