Winthrop Building

The Winthrop Building, located at 7 Water Street in Boston, Massachusetts, is an iconic early skyscraper completed in 1894. Designed by Clarence H. Blackall in the Renaissance Revival style, it was the first building in Boston to feature a steel frame. Originally named the Carter Building, it was renamed in 1899 in honor of Puritan Governor John Winthrop. The building has housed notable tenants, including landscape architect Fletcher Steele and the Boston offices of the Associated Press. Recognized for its historical significance, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974 and designated a Boston Landmark in 2016, making it a noteworthy site for tourists and researchers alike.
