The Woodlands (William Hamilton Estate and Cemetery)

The Woodlands began as the late-18th-century country estate of planter and botanist William Hamilton and includes a Georgian mansion, designed landscapes, and an adjoining cemetery. In the 19th century the grounds became a rural cemetery and arboretum noted for funerary art and mature specimen trees. The site preserves Hamilton's landscape design and the evolution of American garden and cemetery practices. The Woodlands is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and operates as a historic house museum and public garden.
