Coit Tower (Pioneer Park)

Coit Tower was completed in 1933 using funds bequeathed by Lillie Hitchcock Coit to beautify San Francisco. The cylindrical Art Deco tower sits atop Telegraph Hill and contains a series of 1934 murals executed by local artists under federally funded New Deal art programs. The murals depict California life during the Depression and generated contemporary controversy for some political content; the tower remains a noted 1930s civic-era landmark.
