Walka Water Works

Walka Water Works, located in Oakhampton Heights, New South Wales, is a heritage-listed 19th-century pumping station established in 1887 to supply water to Newcastle and the lower Hunter Valley. This significant engineering site features a complex designed by renowned British engineer Sir William Clark, which included innovative pumping systems and a reservoir that remains visible today as Walka Lake. The waterworks played a crucial role in improving public health by facilitating sewerage systems and was the primary water source for the region until 1929. After a period of inactivity, it briefly served as a coal power station in the 1950s. Now part of the Walka Recreation and Wildlife Reserve, it offers visitors a glimpse into the area's industrial history and engineering achievements.
