Spirit of Freedom at the African American Civil War Memorial

The African American Civil War Memorial features a central bronze sculpture titled 'Spirit of Freedom' by Ed Hamilton, dedicated in 1998. The sculpture depicts a Union Army soldier and serves as the focal point of a memorial plaza that includes a Wall of Honor listing the names of more than 200,000 African American soldiers and sailors. The memorial and the adjacent African American Civil War Museum commemorate African Americans who served in the Civil War.
