400 First Avenue

400 First Avenue is an eight-story building in Manhattan's Kips Bay neighborhood, originally opened in 1931 as the Institute for the Crippled and Disabled, thanks to a generous donation from philanthropist Jeremiah Milbank. The building features a unique mix of facilities, including a welding shop, employment center, and dormitory for individuals with disabilities. In 1973, it was sold to the City of New York and now serves as a public school and administrative offices for a specialized school district. As of 2025, efforts are underway to have it designated as a historic landmark, highlighting its significance in the community and its role in supporting individuals with disabilities.
