Palace of Fine Arts and the 1915 Panama–Pacific exposition

The Palace of Fine Arts was constructed for the 1915 Panama–Pacific International Exposition and its classical rotunda and colonnades quickly became an iconic symbol of the fair. Because the original structure was intended as a temporary exposition building, it deteriorated and was largely rebuilt in permanent materials during the 1960s, with later restorations preserving the site. Its history as a fair structure and subsequent reconstruction have made the Palace a persistent element of San Francisco civic lore and a frequent filming location. The lagoon and classical architecture are documented features of the Marina District landscape.
