United Workers Cooperatives

The United Workers Cooperatives, also known as Allerton Coops, is a historic apartment complex located in the Allerton neighborhood of the Bronx, New York City. Built between 1926 and 1929 in the Tudor Revival style, this cooperative housing project was established by the United Workers' Association, primarily composed of secular Jewish members with socialist leanings. The Coops aimed to provide better living conditions for working-class families, featuring amenities like classrooms and a library, and implemented a non-eviction policy during the Great Depression. The complex played a significant role in the 1931-33 New York City rent strikes, showcasing the community's solidarity. Despite financial struggles leading to its conversion to rental housing in 1943, the Coops remained a symbol of organized tenant activism. Recognized for its historical significance, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986 and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1991.
