Elfreth's Alley - the nation's oldest continuously inhabited residential street

Elfreth's Alley in Old City dates to around 1702 and is designated as the oldest continuously inhabited residential street in the United States. The block retains numerous 18th- and early-19th-century row houses and is interpreted by the Elfreth's Alley Museum and associated preservation efforts. The alley's history and continuous residential occupation are documented through historic registers and museum records. It remains a preserved historic district and active residential street in Philadelphia.
