Fort Negley (Civil War stone fort)

Fort Negley was constructed by Union forces after Nashville fell in 1862 and was built largely of hand-cut stone and earthworks. It is commonly described in historical sources as the largest inland fortification constructed in the American South during the Civil War. The site is now Fort Negley Park and includes reconstructed walls, interpretive signage, and a small visitor area documenting its construction and use, including the labor of African American workers. The fort's ruins and park remain visible on a hill south of downtown Nashville.
