Baltimore Equitable Society

The Baltimore Equitable Society, established in 1794, is one of the oldest fire insurance companies in the United States and is housed in a historic building in Baltimore, Maryland. Originally built in 1857 for the Eutaw Savings Bank, the Italian Renaissance-style structure features a brownstone front and brick sides. The Society is known for its unique fire mark, a symbol of insurance coverage, which depicts clasped hands. This historic institution has played a significant role in the city's development and witnessed key events, including the War of 1812. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977 and is set to become the M&T Pavilion, an entertainment venue, while the Society has relocated to a new office in the Harbor East neighborhood.
