Bergstrom Air Force Base (closed and repurposed)

Bergstrom Air Force Base, located southeast of downtown Austin, was closed by the U.S. Air Force in 1993 following Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) decisions. The former base property was acquired by the city and redeveloped; Austin-Bergstrom International Airport opened on the site in 1999. Many base-era buildings and runways were removed or repurposed during the conversion to civilian airport facilities. The change marked the disappearance of Bergstrom AFB as a distinct military installation in Austin's landscape.
