First World Series of Poker winner declared at Binion's (1970)

The inaugural World Series of Poker took place at Binion's Horseshoe in 1970, and Johnny Moss was declared the winner after a vote by the participating players. That 1970 event was invitation-only and decided by peer selection rather than by a single tournament final table as in later years. Binion's role in hosting and promoting the early WSOP established Las Vegas as a center for competitive poker.
