Abbey of Vangadizza

The Abbey of Vangadizza, located in Badia Polesine, northern Italy, is a historic former Benedictine abbey with roots dating back to the 950s. It became an independent fief in 996 and was recognized as a diocese under the Holy See. The abbey flourished culturally, housing a significant library and a school until it lost its temporal rights in the early 15th century. Today, visitors can explore remnants of its Romanesque-Gothic architecture, including the apse chapel, a bell tower with ancient elements, and a 13th-century portico-courtyard adorned with Verona marble columns. Notable artworks include 17th-century frescoes by Filippo Zaniberti. The site also features the tombs of Este family members, adding to its historical significance.
