Red Wings octopus-throwing tradition origin

The tradition of Detroit Red Wings fans throwing octopuses onto the ice began at Olympia Stadium during the 1952 Stanley Cup playoff run. Fans tossed an octopus to symbolize the eight playoff wins that were once required to win the Stanley Cup. The practice became a recurring fan ritual at Olympia and continued at Joe Louis Arena and later Little Caesars Arena as part of Detroit hockey culture.
