Col. Monroe M. Shipe House

The Col. Monroe M. Shipe House, located in the historic Hyde Park district of Austin, Texas, is a unique two-story residence completed in 1892 by its founder, Monroe M. Shipe. This architectural gem showcases an eclectic mix of styles, including Stick style and Queen Anne elements, topped with a distinctive flat concrete roof. Shipe not only built the house but also designed the surrounding neighborhood of Hyde Park, creating a subdivision known as 'Shadowlawn.' Interestingly, during renovations, it was revealed that the house was constructed using lumber from the grandstands of the nearby State Fair of Texas. The house is situated at 3816 Avenue G and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983, making it a noteworthy stop for tourists and researchers interested in Texas history and architecture.
