Madison Square Garden (Penn Plaza)

The current Madison Square Garden arena, located above Pennsylvania Station, opened in 1968 and replaced earlier Madison Square Garden venues elsewhere in Manhattan. It is home to the NHL's New York Rangers and the NBA's New York Knicks and hosts concerts, sports, and large-scale events. The building's construction atop the original Pennsylvania Station's demolition in the 1960s helped galvanize the modern historic preservation movement in New York City. The arena remains a major cultural and sporting landmark in Midtown Manhattan.
